As promised, here's an update on my "pulling problem"
Checked out the coils and HT leads over the weekend and found the following:
Both coils were hanging in mid-air under the tank! Both rubber mountings had perished and split so were no longer supporting the coils at all, I checked the connections (not bad) and cable tied them for now.
I then had a good look at the HT leads. Both have a generally worn and weathered look to them, I guess 5-6 years is getting on a bit. They didn't "grab" the spark plug that convincingly so I worked the springs a little and improved things.
I checked the plugs and both looked ok, good colour etc
I checked the sparks on both and they seemed ok.

Now here's the thing, the bike is now running a whole lot better! The engine sounds smoother and the power is fairly consistent up to around 8000 revs.
It is still not quite right but hey. So the problem would seem to be either coil or HT leads.
Over the next couple of months I'll replace the components and hope to ride trouble free into the spring.

All the best,

Crezz
Visitor Forum :: Re: Engine pulling at high revs http://www.jinlun-owners.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?topic=106882#106882 http://www.jinlun-owners.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?topic=106882#106882 Wed, 11 Jan 2012 01:57:40 +0000 By: kawasakigpz900r

Quote by: crezz[pI'm leaning towards an electrical problem at high load, I'll check all the ignition and coil connections. Someone on here maybe close to you and let you try their coils, at least that way you can eliminate them.
Visitor Forum :: Re: Engine pulling at high revs http://www.jinlun-owners.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?topic=106863#106863 http://www.jinlun-owners.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?topic=106863#106863 Tue, 10 Jan 2012 14:26:45 +0000 By: crezz

Hi all,

Thanks everyone for taking the time to post regarding my "pulling problem".
Just to clarify, the bike pulls (holds back) around the 6000 rev range in any gear, feeling as if i'm grabbing and releasing the brakes.

Perhaps if I go back to the point when the problem started, it may give some clues?
Late last summer I had the bike up on a stand to give the chain some lube and adjust it as I thought it was a bit slack.
Following day, the problem started.
I thought that I'd over-tightened the chain, let it off a little, but no joy.

After that I tried new plugs, oil change checked HT lead connections but no change.
The bike had a K&N filter fitted from the previous owner, I removed that about a year ago, no performance change at that time, all good.
Since the problem started, I,ve fitted a standard filter pad in to the air box (missing after previous K&N Mod) but again, no change.

Regarding the valve, rings, carb adjustment ideas, wouldn't they cause a gradual problem over time and effect general engine performance? Likewise the air and fuel filters?

I'm leaning towards an electrical problem at high load, I'll check all the ignition and coil connections. What about the CDI? Can they break down under load?

I'm no mechanic folks, and any advice would be much appreciated.
I'll post an update after I've tried a few more things this weekend.

Cheers Crezz

Visitor Forum :: Re: Engine pulling at high revs http://www.jinlun-owners.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?topic=106861#106861 http://www.jinlun-owners.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?topic=106861#106861 Tue, 10 Jan 2012 13:21:53 +0000 By: Lardarzz

not sure what your problem is if i read it right at 6000rpm it pulls better than at lower revs ?

if i read correctly then i am not surprised i have said for long time these bikes ride best at top of rev band and that is why best thing i bought for mine was a rev counter as i was riding mine to gently at start they have always been like this i not sure why
Visitor Forum :: Re: Engine pulling at high revs http://www.jinlun-owners.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?topic=106860#106860 http://www.jinlun-owners.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?topic=106860#106860 Tue, 10 Jan 2012 09:47:23 +0000 By: kirriepete

As others have said, airflow is a favourite - imagine trying to run flat out with a sock stuffed in your mouth .....

Fuel starvation? Check that the tank filter's not clogged up and your float heights are correct. It won't do any harm to check the carbs are balanced, although I doubt this is the problem.

How are your valve clearances - if they're a bit tight you may not be getting enough go-juice in at peak revs (should check valves before balancing carbs anyway).

Other possibilities include HT circuit breaking down at peak loads - leads, coils & plug caps - check all connections are clean & corrosion-free.

That little lot should keep you going for a while ....
Visitor Forum :: Re: fuel filter http://www.jinlun-owners.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?topic=106857#106857 http://www.jinlun-owners.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?topic=106857#106857 Mon, 09 Jan 2012 22:28:02 +0000 By: Steve125

Shame you live so far away mate. Next thing would be to do a compression test. I've no idea what the pressure is meant to be on these bikes, but maybe your piston rings needs changing.
